Yesterday, my dad wrote a post on how we prepared for the exciting Flower Parade in the Belgian village called Loenhout. Well on the Sunday it was the big day for the parade! There were so many people and everyone was excited to be there.
At the parade we saw four categories:
- Little children
- Junior
- Teens
- Adults
There were so many amazing floats that I could only list a few in each category.
In the little children’s category here are some of the floats I liked:
Name: De Toperaddestoel
Prize: First place
Why I liked it: I liked it because it was small and nice. The costumes were funny too! The kids all had their faces painted blue except for Gargamell! They were Smurfs! Some of them rode on scooters and skateboards and others walked.
The float was a Smurf’s house in the shape of a toadstool.
Did you know the Smurfs were created by the Belgians?
Name: Feest Met Cupcakes
Prize: Third place
Why I liked it: It was sweet! Ha ha! There was a big cupcake with a cherry on top.
Here are some from the Junior Group:
Name: Billy the Cowboy
Prize: Eighth place
Why I liked it: Mikhaila and I helped make this one – we had the chance to decorate the wagon with the flowers. The children were cute in their costumes and cowboy hats doing their cowboy dance! The float was a wagon with a big smiling face at the back.
Name: Het Oude Egypte
Prize: seventh place
Why I liked it: The costumes for the girls were Cleopatra’s and the costumes for the boys were mummies. It was a pyramid and an open coffin with a child dressed up like a mummy sitting in it.
Name: Plop In De Wolken
Prize: Sixth place
Why I liked it: The costumes were so cute! The little children wore hats with bells on the ends. The float looked like their house. It is from a popular children’s show that is kind of like the Wiggles.
Name: Ghost Busters
Prize: fifth place
Why I liked it: The costumes were ghosts and the ghost busters. The ghost busters had big tubes and things all hand made. The costumes made the float look even better. The float was a building with a car in front of it.
Name: Hippies Van Het Oude-Dorp
Prize: second place
Why I liked it: The float was a hippie van that said peace and love all made in flowers and leaves. The costumes for the girls were dresses and the boys had rainbow bell bottoms and rainbow shirts.
Here is one that I really liked from the teen section:
Name: Life is Music
Prize: first place
Why I liked it: They played loud rock music and at the front in big letters wrote “LIFE IS MUSIC”. They also had a giant guitar, a giant saxophone and a big drum set. The costumes were black and white.
Here are some that I liked from the adult group:
Name: Serpento
Prize: eleventh place
Why I liked it: The float was snake charming with the snakes in the pots and the music plays and the snakes come out. We also helped decorate this one by preparing the flowers and putting purple flowers on the music notes.
Name: Pink Floyd the Wall
Prize: eighth place
Why I liked it: The float was a big white wall with a purple monster standing over it. The costumes were students that were supposed to look like zombies.
Name: Den Grooten Oorlog
Prize: seventh place
Why I liked it: We had just done a lot of learning about World War I so I could understand the trenches and main idea about this float. Instead of having a radio with sound effects, they had people playing the last post on what was supposed to be Menin Gate.
Name: Carrousel Royal
Prize: fifth place
Why I liked it: The float was a king and queen and their crowns were rides from a fair. The king had a carousal with horses moving up and down while the crown was spinning. The queen had swings and the crown also spun. The queen’s hair was swirly and the eyes had a lot of detail.
Name: Destroyed
Prize: fourth place
Why I liked it: The float was the Statue of Liberty that was broken lying on the ground. It was purple and white and the torch looked like an actual flame.
Name: Impact
Prize: second place
Why I liked it: There was a lot of action going on. The float was two boxers punching each other. The expressions on their faces looked real. We also had a friend on this team – Ege so we were happy that his float came in 2nd!
Name: Jacht
Prize: first prize
Why I liked it: The float had a lot of action. It was two foxes, one pouncing and the other one getting ready to pounce on to a running rabbit. For more effect they used bamboo instead of grass which made it look even better. The detail in the face and eyes and the way the tail is curved perfectly looked amazing and I agree with the judges.
You have to remember that all of these floats are made out of flowers.
We had such a great experience and would choose do it again in a heartbeat!
We would like to thank Ingrid, Guy, Robin, Katrien, Orphee, Ege and Maurtiz for inviting us to their home and sharing this wonderful community event with us.
Here is the official site for the Flower Parade – the photos are amazing!

Whaauw Zoe, you just wrote a really good comment about the flowerparade. With all these photos and your clear explanation, people who don’t know this at all, will hopefully have a better idea of what it is all about. And you already know it is not just about the floats and the flowers, but about the friendship between the people of the village. There is a healthy competition among all the neighbourhoods. By the way, KLJ with Impact ended first at Monday night in the tent ! I thought they deserved this, and Ege was really happy for this 🙂
Hi!
Congratulations to Ege on Impact! We had such a great time building the floats and thought it was so nice that all of the neighbourhoods in the village participated. Thank you for inviting us so we could experience building the floats and watching the flower parade, we had so much fun! 🙂
SURPRENANT CES BELGES!!! Quel beau voyage vous faites!!!!!
Ici à Montreuil on pense bien à vous! Louise et Jossya
Bonjour!
Nous avons eu un bon temps dans Paris avec vous. Vous pouvez venir au Canada n’importe temps.
What a wonderful parade Zoe, hard to believe they are all made out of flowers. I am sure you were extra pleased to enjoy the parade due to the fact you helped to make one of the floats. I think I liked the float you and Mikhaila did and the Royal Carousel most of all! Thanks for all the great photos, I felt like I was watching the parade too!
Love Teta Doreen
Hi!
You are right, it is hard to believe they are all made out of flowers! It looks even better when you are actually there and worked on some of the floats. I liked the Royal Carousel one also! I also really liked the fox one because there was a lot of small details and also a lot of action.
Zoe this is absolutely breathtaking!!! Thank you for sharing.

Hi!
It was so much fun building the floats and we had lot’s fun watching all of them go by.
Zoe, I, too, felt that I was watching the parade! It is wonderful that your family was able to experience the warmth, and creativity of such a great community as well as participate in decorating the floats! Your photos and commentary are superb! Thanks for sharing. Love. Baba
Hi!
I think it would be great if we bring it to Toronto so we could do it to! It was so much fun and you would have loved all of the flowers and the creativity!
Hi, Zoe, Opa and I looked at and read your posting several times because there are so many details on the individual floats. So finally I let Opa look “his fill” he was basically salivating over so many flowers, the different colours and sizes of the blossoms. I found it amazing, how harmoniously the colours were blended, real artistry. I bet this was a week-end that you all will remember. The people of Loenhout must be very special to open their doors and hearts to you all, but so are you (special). I loved your posting and the descriptions of the floats and also your favourites. I agree with you, The Smurf house is really neat and as a second favourite I choose the Cobra Float, and last but not least I just loved the VW Hippy Camper – since we had two of those once upon a time. Zoe thank you for your post of an amazing event, especially your commentary and the many photos. Gazillion XOXOXO’s
Hi!
I am glad you and Opa liked this post and I think you would have been amazed to see the flowers and floats up close.
Hi Zoe,
I just can’t get enough of the beautiful flowers and the creativity of the floats! Love, Baba
Hi!
I knew you you would like it! See my other comment above.
hi Zoe its Katherine, this flower parade seems really cool! Was it hard to make the flower musical notes?
Hi!
The musical notes were not hard to make. We stuck the flowers and pins into styrofoam shaped like a music note. Then the music notes that we made were stuck onto the big float! 🙂
What a lot of fun – It is so cool you guys got to help build one of the floats – the pictures are fantastic
Harriet
Hi!
It was really cool to help out with building the floats and now we understand how much work goes into it! 🙂
