What do France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland all have in common? They are all amazing places to visit and were featured in our most recent Global Fieldtrip Night – Engaging Europe!
Back in September we presented our first Global Fieldtrip night featuring the Uplifting UK, and we had a similar turn out – with almost 40 of our friends, family and neighbours joining us for a fantastic evening of sharing. This month we had a new mix of people as some who attended our last session could not make it out for this month’s event, and we welcomed some new additions to our audience!
While there is a fair amount of planning involved to make sure that everything runs smoothly, part of the fun is testing out our recipes to make sure they work out properly. The ingredients we used while traveling are often quite different – for instance milk and butters have more cream than we are accustomed to here. We are not disheartened when a recipe doesn’t turn out – it just means we get to eat the “mistake batch” and try again! (note: we were just introduced to the concept of a “mistake batch” by Nicole, whose daughters Abby and Jessica often ask for “mistake batch fudge”!!! Nicole shared one of these mistake batches with us and it was a delicious mistake!)
After slaving over a hot oven for days on end, Mikhaila and Zoe were excited to present their creations to our guests!
We served a few appetizers with our house decorated for Halloween!
We also served a variety of foods including Croque Monsieurs, Ratatouille, home-made pretzels, sausages and spaetzle.
Soon it was time for the fun to begin! We absolutely love sharing our photos and stories with all of our friends.
Since we were at the end of the Blue Jays’ run for the World Series, we were all very much in baseball mode…and so we included our own “Seventh Inning Stretch” as part of our intermission. We called it a Dance Break featuring the “Duck Dance” of Switzerland! Everyone was a good sport and got into the fun.
As we wrapped up our evening, it was time to try some Global Fieldtrip desserts! The girls baked Pain au Chocolat, Speculoos cookies, and made Belgian Chocolate Mousse…all recipes we came across during our travels.
While the kids decorated Speculoos cookies, the adults enjoyed our other dessert selections.
Overall, a great evening was had by all!
A special thanks to our guest speakers Kim and Denis, who shared some photos and insights into their little gem on the Mediterranean in Collioure, France.
We welcome any speakers who would like to share their experiences as we continue to host additional evenings over the coming months. Feel free to volunteer!
I have attached our slide show below…please enjoy and share!
