Art Around the Streets of Barcelona

,

Have you ever been on a street art tour?

We went on a street art tour around the Old City and the New City in Barcelona, Spain.

There is a lot of art around the streets of Barcelona. Most of them are Gaudi inspired mosaic artworks like the The Head of Barcelona.  This artwork is a statue of a person’s face made by Roy Lichtenstein and was places down at the water front for the summer Olympics on 1992.  It has mosaics and is a very interesting sculpture.

Some other artwork can be found in unexpected places such as underneath the floor of some apartment balconies.

Another place is where over 500+ people walk everyday. The ground. In some areas, there are beautiful mosaics right under our feet.

The first street art we saw on our tour was on a church. It said Placa Del Milicia Desconegut which means “Place of the Unknown Militia”. It was the first spray painted street art in Barcelona.

First street art of Barcelona.

It is illegal to do street art in most areas of Barcelona. There are some small spots around the city where people are allowed to paint on the walls and leave art they created. One small area was covered with paintings and sculptures. There were many images of people and sculptures representing a variety of social issues such as schooling, health and enployment.

The fines for doing street art:

Paint= €6000.00
Poster= €50.00
Painted wooden shapes= €00.00

There were also a lot of wooden shapes of “Fat Boy”. Everybody loves the Fat Boy lottery at Christmas because it is an over €1,000,000 lottery. I would definitely want to win that!

About every ten days, the city cleaners go around and paint over all of the street art on the walls. They do not worry about the doors because they say it is the owners’ responsibility to clean it off.

We learned a lot about street art and I think some of them are amazing.  Now I will be more aware and look for it in other cities and countries.

  1. If the city workers paint over the art every 10 days then you got to see art that others will never get to see. That is cool! I like the bunny art though it is a bit freaky!

  2. Hi, Zoe, I just checked to see if there is a posting, and to my joy I saw your report, the photos are so amazing and I like the descriptions. My favourite is the Heart (Fat Boy ), it reminds me of Picasso’s art. It’s great that you do these walking tours, you see so much more and also many different things. XOXOXO’s

  3. Hi Zoe,
