An Endless Experience at the Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is a big “A” shaped tower that is one of the biggest tourist attractions in France.

The Eiffel Tower was built by a man named Gustave Eiffel for the World’s Fair and to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of the French Revolution in 1889.  He came in first place for the design competition and received some money to build it.  Gustave asked the government if he could receive the profits for the tower for twenty years. They agreed, but after twenty years something terrible happened!  The government said they were going to tear it down after all of Gustave’s hard work! Gustave Eiffel tried to convince them not to tear it down but it was no use. Then Gustave had an idea. He went to some military leaders and convinced them to go ask the government to keep the tower up and put a radio antenna at the top of it for military communication. The government agreed and that is how the tower is still standing today.

While we were in Paris, we saw the Eiffel Tower on a tour and after climbed up 669 stairs. When we got to the first floor, we saw some amazing views and were so high up! When we got to the second floor we could see so far and were very, very high! It was spectacular!

At home in Toronto, we have the CN Tower which is another popular and large tower that you can climb up or take the elevator and also see some amazing sights.

Going to the Eiffel Tower was an amazing experience. It was even better when the whole family went to see it at night. It lights up and then goes into full sparkle mode for five minutes at the beginning of each hour at night after 9:00 PM.

We had a lot of fun eating our chocolate and banana crepes while watching it light up.

Seeing and climbing the Eiffel Tower was a great experience and I would definitely go back another time!

Zoe , thanks for high-LIGHTING the Eiffel tower in today’s post. It is a great monument. When I was there with my boys we had fun playing in the park just near the base of the tower and visiting a Christmas Market they hold nearby. I love “sparkle mode” and I didn’t know it was ever at risk of being torn down. I can’t imagine Paris without it.

    1. Hi!

We had a picnic at the bottom of the tower near the big park. I am so glad the tower did not get torn down because I wouldn’t get to see it in sparkle mode!

  2. Thanks Zoe for reminding me of the history of the Eiffel Tower. It sounds like you had a great time there. I didn’t see it all lit up – next time. I am adding banana and chocolate crepes to my list too.

    1. Hi!

Sparkle mode is awesome! It is also very nice when you get to see it while you are eating crepes!

  3. Zoe, I am a friend of your mothers and I want to thank you for the interesting info re the Tower. I have been there three times and am ashamed to say that I did NOT know about its history! When I return ( and I will) I will appreciate it even more thanks to you. And like Doreen, I will indulge in banana and chocolate crepes…oh wait! I cannot eat chocolate ! Will I find a caramel substitute?

    1. Hi!

I do not know if there is a caramel and banana one but you can get strawberry and whipped cream which is delicious!

  4. Zoe, do you know WHY the French government wanted to tear it down..? I heard a story that it was because the people of Paris thought “La Tour Eiffel” was ugly and didn’t believe that it fit into their beautiful city! Isn’t it interesting how opinions change over time?

I really like how you made a connection between the two (very different!) Towers in Paris and Toronto! Do you have a favourite? C’est la version française que je préfère! 🙂

    1. Hi!

I heard that the people thought it was ugly too.

I like both towers a lot but what I like about the the CN tower is that you can look at it from the rogers center while you are watching a Blue jays game if the roof is open! I also like it when it lights up with colour. I like the Eiffel Tower because there are a lot of little stands where you can buy crepes close by!

  5. Thank you for teaching me the history about the very beautiful Eiffel Tower and also for encouraging my taste buds to make chocolate banana crepes. There are so many beautiful kinds! Love Baba
