Croque Monsieurs are fancy ham and cheese sandwiches, which are really yummy as a snack or meal. I had never really known exactly how to make them. We had them for lunch, and it made us feel very French! It was better than a grilled cheese, and can be bought all over Paris from the bakeries.
My dad went out to buy the ingredients, and when he bought the cheese, he had to ask the butcher to cut it. The butcher refused to use a machine like the other butchers would, so it was all done by hand, which made it even more authentic.
If you are curious about how to make this fine food, read on!
2 tablespoons mayonnaise (optional)
3/4 teaspoon dried sage (optional)
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper (optional)
8 slices sandwich bread
4 ounces baked ham, thinly sliced
8 thin slices sweet-tart apple
8 slices Cantal or cheddar cheese (enough to fill 4 sandwiches)
4 tablespoons butter, softened
1. Combine mayonnaise, sage, and pepper. (optional)
2. Spread the herbed mayonnaise on four pieces of bread.
3. Place some ham, 2 slices of cheese, and 2 apple slices on the mayonnaise side of the bread.
4. Put the other piece of bread on top to make a sandwich.
5. Spread the butter on the outside of the pieces of bread.
6. Place the sandwiches on an ungreased baking sheet, and broil for about 5 minutes.
7. Turn over the sandwiches and broil for an additional 5 minutes.
8. Wait for it to cool.
9. EAT!

Yumm – Love croque-monsieur’s and croque-madame’s!
Hi Terry,
I had never heard of croque- madame’s before so thank you for bringing this up. For those of you who don’t know what croque- madame’s are, click on this link to find out.

Thanks for the cooking lesson. I was surprised they had apples inside. I bet they were really tasty.
Harriet
Hello Harriet,
My mom found the recipe with apples and she thought it would be interesting to try, so that is why there are apples inside. It was a surprise to me as well! But the sweet and salty combination works well together.
Sounds like something even Uncle Peter can prepare; and, it looks and probably tastes better than plain old grilled cheese. Glad to know you are eating well, like royalty, during your travels. So much easier to prepare meals when you are staying in an apartment, rather than a hotel.
Hi Aunt Mary,
This is one of the easiest recipes I have made and I have no doubt that Uncle Peter would do a great job if he made them for you. Your grilled cheese is still my favourite sandwich and the croque- monsieurs would need to work really hard to be yummy if they hope to top it. I agree, there is much more space in apartments than in hotels to cook and reorganize all of our stuff.
I prefer Chocolate, but Scott thinks this sounds great.
Hi Teta Amanda,
Maybe you could invent a type of croque- monsieur made entirely out of chocolate! Just don’t put it in the oven or it would be a puddle instead of a sandwich. You could always ask Uncle Scott to make you a chocolate one just for fun (and because chocolate is delicious). You’ll really enjoy Zoe’s post that is coming out tomorrow; it’s a lot sweeter than this one!
Thanks! This is definitely something I will try. Love the idea if the apple inside the sandwich !
Hello Herta,
The apple inside the croque- monsieur made it very tasty and unique, because I’ve never eaten a sandwich with all those ingredients before.
Mikhaila, Thank you for the recipes– I am going to buy the ingredients on Thursday. They look delicious! Love. Baba
Hi Mikhaila
Was just hearing about a new pizza with pork and apples in it, so I guess apples are good in just about everything. I look forward to making your sandwich and Zoe’s pastry for dessert! Yum.
Love Teta Doreen xoxo
Hi Mik. I too had never heard of this sandwich – read it in your blog and then saw them on the menu at the McMichael Gallery (group of 7) in Kleinburg this week. There with some english relatives – they too are on their way around the world! My cousin Daniel ordered it – said it is a favourite. How cool to learn about the sandwich from you and then from my cousin. By the way, Daniel’s dad, Chris, is the spitting image of George Clooney!! Wherever he goes, people stop and ask him for his autograph. Thought maybe Chris had snuck away to Venice to get married!!! But seeing the woman on the real George’s arm, I am assured it was not my cousin Chris!!!
