Global Fieldtrip Night – Engaging Europe!

What do France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland all have in common?  They are all amazing places to visit and were featured in our most recent Global Fieldtrip Night – Engaging Europe!

Back in September we presented our first Global Fieldtrip night featuring the Uplifting UK, and we had a similar turn out – with almost 40 of our friends, family and neighbours joining us for a fantastic evening of sharing.  This month we had a new mix of people as some who attended our last session could not make it out for this month’s event, and we welcomed some new additions to our audience!

While there is a fair amount of planning involved to make sure that everything runs smoothly, part of the fun is testing out our recipes to make sure they work out properly.  The ingredients we used while traveling are often quite different – for instance milk and butters have more cream than we are accustomed to here.  We are not disheartened when a recipe doesn’t turn out – it just means we get to eat the “mistake batch” and try again!  (note: we were just introduced to the concept of a “mistake batch” by Nicole, whose daughters Abby and Jessica often ask for “mistake batch fudge”!!!  Nicole shared one of these mistake batches with us and it was a delicious mistake!)

After slaving over a hot oven for days on end, Mikhaila and Zoe were excited to present their creations to our guests!

We served a few appetizers with our house decorated for Halloween!

We also served a variety of foods including Croque Monsieurs, Ratatouille, home-made pretzels, sausages and spaetzle.

Food, glorious food!

Soon it was time for the fun to begin!  We absolutely love sharing our photos and stories with all of our friends.

Since we were at the end of the Blue Jays’ run for the World Series, we were all very much in baseball mode…and so we included our own “Seventh Inning Stretch” as part of our intermission.  We called it a Dance Break featuring the “Duck Dance” of Switzerland!  Everyone was a good sport and got into the fun.

As we wrapped up our evening, it was time to try some Global Fieldtrip desserts!  The girls baked Pain au Chocolat, Speculoos cookies, and made Belgian Chocolate Mousse…all recipes we came across during our travels.

While the kids decorated Speculoos cookies, the adults enjoyed our other dessert selections.

Overall, a great evening was had by all!

A special thanks to our guest speakers Kim and Denis, who shared some photos and insights into their little gem on the Mediterranean in Collioure, France.

We welcome any speakers who would like to share their experiences as we continue to host additional evenings over the coming months.  Feel free to volunteer!

I have attached our slide show below…please enjoy and share!

    1. Hi Sharon,

We look forward to seeing you at one of our future events! Thanks for following!

  2. looks like a lot of ‘after-fun’ 🙂 I actually feel sorry that Canada is this far away, I’d love to be there too and enjoy your wonderful stories 🙂

    1. Hi Ingrid,

We have been having a lot of fun sharing our adventures, and our time with your family to participate in the Flower Parade was one of the highlights of our trip. It would be great to see you, too…if you are ever in Toronto you know our door is open.

    Hi all,

As usual, I just cannot resist reading your mail the moment I see it. It is simply wonderful. Zoe is looking very sweet with her “hair do”. I like the lavish display of the pretty mouthwatering “Just a few appetizers”.

I have admired your approach of “Inform, Involve and Inspire” right from day one. Recently, I have been nominated as the District Cabinet Secretary of Lions Clubs International, District 321-A1, from 1 July, 2015 to 30 June, 2016. It is a group of about 70 Clubs with about 2500+ Members. Some time back I used your phrase in an address that I was to give to a Lions gathering elaborating on our District’s logo of “Inspire the Next”. I told them that as a District Cabinet Secretary my approach will be to inform the Lion members of the District about the service activities of the Clubs, try to involve them with my periodical communications and inspire them to “Inspire the Next” to become a Lion Member. The District Governor and the Cabinet Members appreciated my approach and elucidation. Thank you to Oliver and the gang for inventing that phrase.

    With best wishes to all,
    RAVI & ANJU

    1. Hi Ravi,

You must be our number one fan! So nice to hear from you on our blog. We are having so much fun sharing our experiences with our friends and neighbours, and continue to try and live our motto to Inform, Involve, and Inspire. We have been inspired by so many of the people we have met on our travels including your family, and love sharing our stories. In our small way we act as cultural ambassadors, sharing the wonderful experiences we have had along the way. We learned that there are a lot of wonderful people in the world and are so happy we were able to get out and meet some of them!

All the best to you with your work in Lions International, a wonderful organization. Hopefully we can continue to inspire one another for years to come.

All the best to your family!

  4. Another fun filled and ‘yummy’ filled event that I am enjoying only via email….Looks as if Teta Jill had a good time though! Good thing that the girls love to cook! And that desert table was amazing….I would have had a really full tummy!!! I sincerely hope that there will be at least one or two more of these events when I return to Canada at the end of April….? This vicarious thing is getting ‘old’.

    1. Hi Herta,

We are always thinking of you when we put on Global Fieldtrip nights. You were one of the originals and a great follower and always had something to add to our blog posts through your comments. We will have some additional sessions after your return in April…but if you happen to be in the Cold North over the winter, please do drop us a line!
