Happy New Year from our house to yours! We wish you all the best for 2018!!! May it be full of health, happiness and of course – TRAVEL!
We are so excited to be back on the travel trail as a family….and are currently in Egypt for a 10 day adventure. Many of our friends and family ask us – why Egypt? Why would we select a place like Egypt to spend our Christmas holidays, especially with all sorts of media reports on how unsafe it is?
Well, let me share our reasoning…it goes back to our big trip of 2014-15 when our family took just over a year to travel the world and experience life outside of Canada. We visited close to 30 countries and touched 6 different continents. It was the best year of our lives; we did some incredible world schooling and our shared experiences brought our family closer together.
One of our original goals of our year long trip was to visit all the Wonders of the World. So far we have visited six man made wonders. The lists of Wonders – including ancient Wonders, Modern Wonders and Natural Wonders etc… is quite extensive and ever changing, but the one place that is always on every list is Egypt and all of its amazing ancient sites.
Being amateur Egyptologists, we were excited to visit the Middle Eastern country during our trip in December of 2014. Sadly, due to some of the troubles, the Canadian embassy decided to close and send their diplomatic service home. We inquired if we could still visit the country, but were told by the Canadian government it would be at our own risk, and if we needed diplomatic help – none would be available. Our thinking at the time was that the world is a big place and we shouldn’t put ourselves in any unnecessary danger, so we opted to skip Egypt and go straight to Israel and Jordan with the promise to ourselves that one day we would return and see the ancient cities.
Well, that day of return is now upon us….and here we are in Egypt! It’s everything we could have hoped for – and more. Just when we think it can’t get any better – it does! Experiencing this adventure as a family has been incredible and our “travel spidey senses” are tingling like crazy! …..And just for the record, the media reports inflate a lot of the concerns. Just like any other place in the world, there are problems, but we shouldn’t let fear stop us from experiencing and enjoying other cultures.
Over this next series of blog posts, we will share our dream trip and what we have experienced over our short time of travel – we really could have spent at least 2-3 months here – there is so much to learn.
Here is our route:
Cairo>>Abu Simbel>>Aswan>>Luxor>>Hurghada>>Cairo
Stay tuned to learn more about our adventures! And once again, Happy New Year to all! May 2018 bring you joy, health and happiness!
