The food in Israel has been amazing! It is so flavourful and fresh that we decided not to cook for ourselves, but to eat from some of the best food stalls we have found so far on our trip. We are not sure what makes their food so tasty, but we think it’s a combination of the sun, spices and flavour combinations.
The country is filled with markets and bread stalls and we have gotten into the bad habit of buying bagelinnis for breakfast and lunch (they last us all day!). Zoe loves the spices that come with it and insists that we all have them poured on our bread – we now call her Spicy Spice girl! There is also a great focus on fresh fruits, especially pomegranates and oranges.
There are also lots of dried fruits, nuts and seeds. Oh yes, and the baklava is amazing!
One thing we found very interesting was a tahini maker. We were able to actually see the mill that crushed the sesame seeds and makes the delicious paste.
During our time here, we tried latkas, different types of salads, soups and meats and of course – too many doughnuts! We’ve also tried the kebabs – which were amazing!
Of course we had to go to some hummus places and loved how you could order different flavours such as pickled lemon, fried mushrooms etc….
Please note…we did not eat here! Let’s make this clear…we just noticed that there are more MacDonalds in Israel than we have seen so far on our trip. What we think is interesting is that it is kosher, meaning you cannot get a cheeseburger as Jewish people do not eat meat and dairy together.
Overall, the food has been incredible and we have all loved the delicious flavours of the Middle East! Where will we be able to get such amazing and tasty shwarmas and falafels back in Toronto!

All of you will simply have to become spice and seasoning experts , who will learn all the best places to shop in the Greater Toronto area , then share that info with all of your blog buddies…. Right? THEN….you will have to host international dinner parties… Yep, all sounds good to me!
Sounds good to me too Herta! I think that is a great idea – we should do it once per month and relive our trip through special dinners. Thanks for the super idea!
Cheers,
Kat:)
Delicious, everything looks so colourful and fresh. I loved the dish of mushrooms….my favourite. I think it is wonderful that the girls are so willing to try new foods – such a rare thing in my circle of friends with kids! Enjoy and travel safely. Love Doreen xoxo
Ahh yes – there has been no issue at all with my kids and food. They try everything! And for the most part – they love it all. Lucky us….if we had picky eaters for kids – this would not be as an enjoyable experience for all!
Cheers,
Kat:)
Hi, Katina, what a great way to celebrate a country. We loved the posting, the photos are, as always great and the different foods look so colourful and inviting – I am ready to try EVERITHING 🙂
Great to hear – let’s have an international food party when we return!
Cheers!
Kat:)
Hi, Kat,
Your pictures are making me hungry!!! The market with the spices and fruits displayed would be an awesome place to visit!
Ginny
Hi Ginny,
We loved all the markets – they were so full of life and great flavours. It’s interesting, people would go and try fruits, veggies etc, before they buy it…right in front of the owner and it wasn’t a problem. I don’t think that would go over too well in Toronto!
Cheers,
Kat:)
I love the descriptions of all of the food. As you know, any travelling for me includes the local food! I guess that we need to put Israel on our travel list! Enjoy Africa! Scott
HI Scott,
You should definitely add it to your list! It was an amazing and delicious part of our trip!
Cheers,
Kat:)
Wow! Those photos are fantastic! I’m with Herta Park! You will have to host International Dinner Parties! Count me in! Love, Mom
Okay – sounds like a plan – international dinner parties once a month with our blog buddies!
Love,
Kat:)
